Stop Asking Open Questions
What we’re fixing tonight: indecision that slows service and kills confidence.

Most service stalls don’t come from the kitchen.
They come from the way we ask questions.
Open questions sound polite, but they create hesitation:
“What would you like to drink?”
“Do you want wine or cocktails?”
Now the guest has homework.
What we want instead is guided choice.
So this is what you coach your team tonight:
The first question should already include the answer.
Instead of:
“Would you like something to drink?”
Teach them:
“Can I start you with a glass of X or Y?”
Two options max.
Both options you’re happy to sell.
Why this matters:
Guests decide faster
Service speeds up
The server stays in control
This isn’t about pressure.
It’s about removing friction.
What to watch for on the floor tonight:
Are servers leading with recommendations?
Are they offering two options, not five?
Do decisions happen quicker at the table?
Send this out in pre-shift.
Reinforce it once mid-service.
Debrief it in one line after close.
Less questions.
More direction.
